Hey guys, I picked up this Garand on trade and know virtually nothing about them. I had about $400 into the gun I traded.

Seemed like a good trade...thoughts? Info is appreciated.

If I remember correctly your rifle based on the SN was made in 1956. Which was next to the last year Springfield made them. I think the other US companies made them up to 1956.

This doesn't take into account the Springfield Armory Inc made ones, which were commercial not military, and foreign made ones.

Typically used garands need accurizing. If they are loose in the stock and other adjustments are not made they may make pie plate size groups at 50 yards. A new barrel will not fix that. There use to be a short NRA publication on what was needed to be done with them. Later on you can try some of the after market things to improve the accuracy. First go see how well it shoots. It is meant to use M2 ball ammo firing a 150 bullet at about 2650 to 2700 fps second. One should not fire most commercial hunting loads in since it can batter the operating rod and back of the receiver. There are some adjustable gas aftermarket items that will allow you use loads with higher gas port pressures. 4895 powder is best for reloads. 30-06 ammo these days costs an arm and leg literally.

$400 is not shabby. Just going off the pics you uploaded you have a later post war M1. They stopped making them in the 6 million range. It is a typical “mix master” with a early milled trigger guard and it has an international harvester bolt. Stock has been proof stamped and is USGI.

One of The most important thing to look at when getting into garands is The ME and TE wear. Also see if there is any import stamping on the barrel (Blu Sky, CAI etc). This usually detracts value if you were to sell it MOST of the time.

I’ve used to collect M1s and had around 25 or so. If you wanted to flip it, take it to Jay’s and he’ll give you $900 for it the way it sits. IMHO, that is a steal and you could put it towards a nice one if your on CMP Forums.
