    This one was killed with a 30-06 at about 70yds.
    The spread on this animal is 67inches. 60 is considered a "trophy".
    During my years guiding in Maine,for moose,I carried a:
    * Marlin 1895,16",45-70,shooting max loaded 405gr WFNGC
    * Ruger #1,45-90Express,405gr max loaded WFNGC

    My MIL is from Houlton Maine, all her crazy Irish relatives have been begging me to go up there and hunt... I think I may do it next year.

    There have been tons of people that had to do major renovations to their house so that they would have a wall wide enough,and mainly tall enough to hang the shoulder mount on.
    Another thing to consider . . . when you are installing a game pole in your backyard to pull a moose up on for gutting/dressing . . . how tall and strong the horizontal pole has to be.
    I used white cedar for the uprights. They were 18-20 inches at the butt and 20 feet long. They were in the ground about 4 feet with two bags of concrete. Up top was a 10 inch "I" beam. The span was wide enough that you could back a 4 place snowmobile trailer between the uprights.
    I used a electric Warn winch for hoisting.
    I used this for coyotes and deer also. It really looked funny with one yote in the middle. --- SAWMAN

    Another "unknown" is how much meat your gonna get from the kill.
    Most people do not have enough friends . . OR . . freezer space to store the 500-600lbs of processed moose meat.
    For cooking moose,the name of the game is - - -> crockpot. Like a deer,a moose has some great tenderloin and back strap. And some steaks are great. The heart is superb. The liver sucks. THEN . . IMO . . crock the rest. Never tried the snout but some say it is great. ---- SAWMAN

    oh yeah! as a Mainer a moose permit was a highly coveted ticket. they hold lotteries to dole 'em out. my friends dad got one after like 17 years of trying. he shot a big bull in the Alagash, hell and gone from a road. lotta work dragging an almost 1,000lb. carcass out. like SAWMAN said, where do you put 500+lbs of meat? we ate moose 3-4 times a week till everyone got tired of it! the best description i have for moose is a cross between beef cow and venison. just a little hint of gamey, and oh so tender... god i wish i had a moose steak right now.

    My wife and I never were drawn so after about 6 years of putting in for it we quit.
    I went to the very first drawing in Agusta. As I remember there were 1000 tags drawn. There were Boy Scouts,Girl Scouts,and everybody else drawing blocks of 10 or so.
    The first few years you had to hunt above the Golden Rd. Then it started expanding to the rest of the state. The bad part was,if you were drawn,it was for a certain district/zone. You might have to travel several hundred miles just to hunt. ---- SAWMAN
