I already know they are "budget" scopes. Saw a small 4x at academy. I've been looking at the vortexes but all the ones I like are just about the cost of the pistol it's going on.(or more, depending on the maker) thanks.

You buy a $40.00 scope or sight . . . . . you get $40.00 worth of scope or sight.
Can't speak to longevity but they most likely put you on a soda can at 40yds.
Main worries . . scope/sight distortion . . this could be around the edges or even towards the middle. Parallax . . I have seen this with 1X scopes and even with dot sights. Battery life . . some are super short. Type battery . . some are hard to find. Any battery that YOU MUST go to a drug store to buy WILL be expensive. (BTW - -> you can buy CR123's cheap)
All in all . . . buy the best scope or sight that you can afford. However . . If it comes in a blister pack it is not recommended by me. --- SAWMAN

As Sawman says the cheaper optics have problems and as you say a better optic can easily be equal to the cost of the firearm and more. The most important aspects are that the scope hold zero. Good if the adjustments are repeatable. A scope with distortion can be used to hit what you are aiming at even if you can not see what it is clearly, but is really not the way to go. Due to my eyes and age I will be putting the inexpensive primary arms 1x red dots on my iron sighted guns. Those are about 90 bucks a pop.

I have a Centerpoint 6-20x50 with adjustable objective that adjusts from 15 yards to infinity on a PCP air rifle that has over 1,000 pellets through it and I can most of the time stack pellets so it's holding zero beautifully. That being said although it's great on the PCP I doubt I would put it on a firearm.

EDIT: Forgot to mention it does have a bright and clear picture. Feels very sturdy and nice clicks when adjusting. Seems like a much more expensive scope

I've got 2 Centerpoints and wouldn't have any qualms about buying more.
    Currently residing on a Marlin 25MN & a Marlin 922M, both .22Magnums...
the 25MN wears a 4-16x44...freaking love it. Perfect for the breed.
Dead Nuts on target at 125 yards if I do my part. Zero'd to 100 yards.
Folks used to see me monthly out at ERML with 'em...most folks were surprised
that they'd perform so well with cheap scopes.

The BIG thing about CenterPoints is the Locking Adjuster Rings...
this is where almost everyone who has trouble, finds it.
It's really simple, but few actually read the directions first,
so they pretty much break the scope right out of the clamshell.
    1. UNLOCK the locking rings before turning the scope adjusting screws.
    That's all.
Otherwise, if one tries to turn the scope adjust screws without doing so...
it breaks the turning mechanism...making the scope no longer work...
until its returned to the factory and they put new guts in it.

Second, if you EVER run across one that's been opened and returned to Walmart,
DO NOT BUY IT...chances are someone already broke the adjusters...and returned
it to them instead of sending it back to CP to repair their own ruddy mistake.
Where...under warranty, they'd simply fix it and send it back to them.

Also, a quick word about the mounting...the 3/8th's rail on most Marlins
is not really optimal for large scopes...hence the change to a DIP rail...

    To this!
Rather fond of the engraved MARLIN on that base :)

DIP has CNC'd parts that really enhance the Marlin catalog...
so if you have a Marlin 60/795, and hate the plastic Trigger Guard and sucky trigger,
well, they can solve that issue with Aluminium parts :)
