Even back in the 80's there were some pretty screwed up military rules about guns...
If you lived on base ya had to keep them & all ammo in the Armory.
NOTHING allowed in the barracks. No ammo or spare mags, either.
I had a Sgt dang near loose his mind over 3 30-rd EMPTY mags in my locker.
Thank God I had a receipt to prove they weren't Mil-Issue.
However, still had to keep them at the Armory as well after that.

You'd think after the Major Hassan shootout they'd allow Sgt's & above
to Carry their Duty Sidearm holstered on base...just in case.
Even if it was kept Holstered with Mag separate, it'd still be a serious deterrant.
I don't think most folks know how very easy it is to get on a base...
and if you look like a duck & walk like a duck, you can get pretty deep into
places that one shouldn't oughta be before being challenged.

We have another Thread on Base access vs CC. One thing that came about after the terrorist major and the Recruiting Station attack was giving Local Base Commanders the Authority to set firearms carry regulations within their area of control. You would need to check your Base regs.
