Not sure if this is a Gunsmithing question.
Are these really nessacery? If so when? If I buy a barrel that has the collar already installed do I need the gauges?

I have only used them once when i bought a different bolt for a military rifle.... as i understood it the gauges were needed anytime you changed a bolt/barrel to make sure headspacing was correct... mine was a simple milspec bolt, yours sounds like a bonified gunsmithing issue... good luck... I'm sure others much more knowledgeable will chime in...

Thanks Buddy! That was quite informative. I'm wondering now how I haven't blown myself up till yet. I've swapped many a bolt around in an old Mauser to shoot the thing. Lucky I guess! I sure might order me a 8mm set.

I was asking about the gauges you can buy for an AR15 when you install a new barrel.

I just opened the both from the copied Quote bubble from my Post, no problem, MauserLarry opened them too. They are a Brownell's Article. Maybe try a copy & paste or your browser is blocking?

My understanding is if you change the barrel or install a barrel, you should check on an AR. Seems the same would be true for the bolt but not sure about that????

I am thinking of getting a set in 7.62x39 since I have a rifle or two in that chambering and there is no good reason to trust some one that is working under less than voluntary conditions with something critical when I do not have to.

I found the links through Google. I am not sure why I am having a problem with these links, but great info. Thanks.

I did not check, but MidwayUSA has some good gunsmithing videos on youtube and perhaps there is one on the correct use headspace gauges.

Factory mil-spec barrels are head-spaced and checked before they leave the factory, same with the bolts. I really doubt you'd ever need to have a factory mil-spec barrel head-spaced. But, if you did happen to get one that was built on a Monday, it'd probably be the bolt that would be out moreso than the barrel, so you'd probably just need to swap the bolt out with another one.

Actually a press barrel fixed AK has the gauge or similar inserted and then a hole through the trunnion is drilled for the rivet which fixes the barrel in place and if the chinese, egyptian, Romanian worker and machine set up was right, then all is well. The 7.62x39 is a lower pressure cartridge so being a little excess in tolerances is maybe not so bad. But is better to know since I may do some reloading.

Yeah, well I was referring to the AR15's.
The ARs are the easy button in rifles these days. I suspected that was what you were referring too and did add the bit on AKs and SKSs that I own to give a fuller picture. HK designs are really different.
