I have an 835 Mossberg that I got when I was a kid back in 1993 or so and I have never done much more than spray some Rem oil in the action. :). I plan to strip it down and do a more thorough cleaning. Could I scrub out the receiver with mineral spirits without worrying about removing the paint?

Yes, I use odorless mineral spirits all the time. It is mild enough on the camo to not hurt it. I use a paint brush and a plastic bin and wash away, makes it very easy to clean.

Thanks for the input. Many years ago I had sprayed some grease in the receiver so it was pretty gummed up. It worked just fine but just nasty. I had never had the trigger group out and gun broken down till this evening:). It was my first gun so it is not going anywhere but deserved to be cleaned and lubed.
