I have never seen canister shot used in a cannon and likely most of you here also have not. So here is a video of such.

I have fired canister rounds. I got in before the Army had gotten rid of the M48 tanks with the 90 MM main gun and fired a bunch of them. I would not have wanted to be downrange as I think it was 1000 ball bearings in the projectile and it made a mess of whatever you were firing at on the range. I knew TC's that had been to Nam and told me they were great for clearing foliage for firing lanes. When we got M60's the canister was not available but the beehive round replaced it. You had to give a target range in your initial fire command for it. The loader set the range on the projective and it exploded 300 meters short of the target. It went off with a big cloud of orange die of some sort and it was pretty lethal also. I can only begin to imagine how terrified the soldiers were during the civil war of cannons shooting these things. I have no idea if the Army has any rounds of this type any longer.

Not sure about the larger rounds, but it's still made in 40mm GL rounds.
