I am doing some research for my niece. She just finished with her gun safety class, and applied for her permit. She has her mind set on a 380. I tried to get her to get a 9mm, but to no avail. I need suggestions on a dependable 380 with a good trigger.

And a slide that she can manipulate. And a mag she can load.
If the ladies will train with them and carry them,I see nothing wrong with a 380Auto.

I can say that the M&P Bodyguard is not a good weapon imo. For new/inexperienced to carry/shooting I always recommend a pistol with a safety too. Other than the Bodyguard, I don't have much experience with .380's

If you can find one, the Sig 230 is very highly regarded. A bit heavy for a .380 but extremely accurate and reliable. Not to mention they are just plain sexy!

Well, I'm a sick puppy that loves old guns...so...
    GRENDEL P10
Internal mag for simplicity, 10 round capacity (loads like a Mauser C96)
few external controls, pretty decent trigger, VERY concealable.
And they are VERY inexpensive. Paid $100 for mine in a pawn shop.

The best part about it, it doesn't feel snappy for a 14-oz pistol.
it just puts rounds downrange fast, without any fuss.
Felt Recoil, is somewhat less than that of my Keltec P11 9mm.

Fits great in Thunderwear or Wifey's Flashbang holster!

    The downside...NEVER totally disassemble. Ever.
    FIELD STRIP ONLY!!!
But to be honest the field strip gets you where you wanna be anyway...clean the barrel, hose out the internals with some spray cleaner, then use compressed air to blow all the cleaner out until everything is dry again. Lube lightly & slap the slide back on. Reload and use when needed. If you do that, it's Idiot Proof.

One thing that might help a bit, is take her to a place that has a good selection of Rental Pistols available...
like the Baker Range, and have her try both .380 & 9mm pistols.

Or if you have a friend that has...say...more pistols than Deadpool...get him to bring a few ;)

G42, I own two. Glocks have built in Safeties, She can just point and shoot. That's one less major issue She won't have to worry about under Stress. We use Critical Defense Ammo.
Steer her towards a kydex one piece holster (very thin) and also get a trigger guard only cover. Get rid of the lanyard it normally comes with and install a 1.5 inch key ring. She can hook the key tether hook most hand bags have to the ring: on draw it will pull the trigger cover off. Cover will keep purse junk out of the trigger area. She can also use the ring to easily remove the cover manually. This is the setup my Wife has bee using for years. She has a few gun purses but she defaults back to those big bucks bags from Dillards.

Where is she going to carry it? If your price point is a 380 then a Ruger ec9s or lc9s may be an option for you. It also has a safety. Too large for pocket carry but I'd guess it would be in her purse. Not much bigger than a 380 and a lot more power

    . . . my post #2 + . . . GLOCK 42.
Please remember,Glocks are built the way that they are for a specific reason. For every complaint that I hear about a Glock,I can give you an extremely good reason why it was intentionally designed/engineered that way.
The pics are of a couple of different ways to carry a (my) 42. Both work extremely well with a little tweaking.
I also would not hesitate to pocket carry my 42 without a holster or other device . . IF (!) there was nothing else carried in the pocket. No change . . NOTHING !! --- SAWMAN

I may have missed it but, I didn't see Ruger LCP mentioned?

I have had the KelTec p3at for years now and the S&W Bodyguard for a couple years now. They are both similar size to the LCP. I consider both of them fairly snappy. I have let several inexperienced women handle them all have struggled with racking the slide.

Those tiney guns are a lot to hang on to. I had a P3AT for awhile. They are small, light, flat, and easy to conceal. The down side is they are hard to hang on to. I found that I would have to adjust my grip on the gun after every shot. I would never reccomend this gun to a female shooter.
There is always a "happy medium" between being small enough to conceal, and large enough to hang on to. I was not too happy with the Glock 42 either untill I added the +0 Pierce Grip Extension to my mags. --- SAWMAN

It has to "fit the shooter" its an option. I have one, and just shot it the other day. Just pocked up another box of practice rounds this morning. I like it, it works for me.

For some time my EDC (pocket) was a Sig P238 .380
    Great pistol and 100% reliable.
Some folks won't care for the SAO cocked & locked carry.
