Vehicles have crossed lanes including heavy vehicles. But the intent is more to keep people from running off the shoulder, especially on bridges.

I think you missed the mark on this one. No way cable barriers in the middle of a median keep people from running off the shoulder. They'd be 15yds off the shoulder to contact the cable barriers.

They are also intended to prevent crossing the medium to opposing traffic and in such cases are well off the shoulder. It depends on what the traffic engineer believe the site calls for as to what gets installed along with available funding.

Below are the old fashion barriers that are being replaced with strung steel cable on the shoulders near davis for the on and exit ramps. Notice these barriers keep the cars on the shoulder. But I suspect you did know that.

When working in Baton Rouge, driving to and fro, I seen several, actually many wrecks on 10 where vehicles hit the steel cables in the median (ala), to include a semi once. And nary one of them were "cut in half", nor nary a one crossed the median, as they got hung up in the barrier. Not saying it isn't possible, I'm sure it is. But I never witnessed it.
No, I don't need web links showing vehicles cut in half by them. I said it's possible.
But I'd rather chance the cable than a head-on in opposing traffic and possibly taking an innocent life.

    * Also, the concrete barriers will/can bounce you back into traffic, unlike the cables. So I believe they are safer in that respect.

On my way back from Mobile this morning, I saw 2 sections of steel cables that had "caught" vehicles headed across the median. Break away steel posts, and the cables were not broken. Easy, fast repair. Don't see the downside, but then again, I have a sunny disposition.

I seem to get a headache and become somewhat nauseous when I pass them on the interstate. My satellite radio comes out with a loud hummmmmm also. Reminds me of when the gov't used to give me LSD. --- SAWMAN

It's to keep the texters and porn-watching truck drivers from crossing into the opposite lanes and killing people who were going safely about their drive.
