Sig 556 buttplate material disintegrated! Area and bits/chunks appear to have a film that is tacky to the touch but firm/hard and smells faintly like rubber, No other Sig stocks have that issue. I picked up the chunks from the floor panal and wiped the carpet surface with a white rag: no wetness or stain on rag. Pulled floorboard rifle was resting on: no sign of stain or saturation in the wood. I'm familiar with common rubber "dry rot". This is specific only to the Heel with the rest of the pad showing no sign of degredation and the tacky film is not dry and transfers to your fingers.

I don't treat plastic or rubber gun parts in the Safe/storage. So on routine storage maintenance I don't even look at the buttstock, then it goes back in the same spot. Nothing has been spilled inside the Safe nor on the heel of the buttstock. No other guns/gear including similar buttpads, scope covers, grips (rubber/plastic) show any sign of this problem.

I considered chemical long term reaction from the synthetic carpet under point pressure of the composit rubber Heel but that's a stretch. The decompisition goes deep, so its not a surface topical contact exposure to a cleaning solvent. I have no recollection of any adverse chemical exposure to the buttstock. Safe does not have a internal light, heater or powered dehumidifier. I use DampRid with a large catch container positioned on the far side of the safe which is dumped and replenished every 60 days.

Has anybody had a similar issue with Sig or other rubber buttock pads? I don't have a Clue on this one, just hope my other Sigs don't catch the same disease!

I found another report of the same decomposition on the Net. Said he called Sig CS and got nowhere! I sent them a Email with pics this afternoon. Site says average response time is 72 hours. I could have called but pics speak volumes. I've had great dealing with them in the past, hope it continues.

Stored muzzle up do you think solvent may have travelled down to the stock?

They are stored muzzle up. Where the stock folds there are "walls" on both parts. Fluid could possibly weep but unlikely with these folding parts being dry and the heel damage has a tacky film I don't see that as a pathway.

I should hear something from Sig CS today if they are going to respond within their stated 72 hour email response time.

Sig says send it to them. No indication of what they "may" do. I need to get some cardboard to make a shipping box to fit over the Factory blue case. I'll post ship/return dates and action they take.

Yes, I offered to remove and send the buttstock but they wanted the entire gun. I assume they want to see if the rifle shows signs of extreme adverse handling/abuse or maybe chemical exposure. No problem for me to send it, I have spares. Lol

Yeah, they can run chemical tests that will help determine what's going on.

    There's another really freaky possibility...
you know how old plastic gets brittle & then crumbly??
Might have dried out too much...sucked the oils right out of the plastic.

Then there's the funny possibility...How bad is your BO??
Might have melted that sucka with STANK!! :D
    Or your deoderant?? Hrm....

Pad that deteriorated was some form of firm rubber that obviously isn't up to vehicle tire standards. Age probably not a factor as the decomposition is only on the heel, the rest of the pad is like new!

The origional Sig Blue case doesn't paper wrap well so I'm waiting for my Son to send back the box I used to send him a Sig 556 last week.
