Blade masters in FL with Jordanian ore make damascus steel. For blade fans this video has a lot of interesting history and how it is done. The ore must have vanadium in it at low concentrations, the master smith, the right techniques, and a bit of luck for this to turn out well. The secretes of wootz damascus steel were lost about 1850. Wootz steel was made in india and the middle east. Swords made of this were likely the best swords that ever where.

The Japanese that started out with crappy iron ore had to go to extraordinary lengths to make their swords because of the impurities. Always helps to start out with superior steel.
