ANDEGLANG, Indonesia - A tsunami killed at least 222 people and injured hundreds on the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra following an underwater landslide believed to have been caused by the erupting Anak Krakatau volcano, officials said on Sunday.

Hundreds of homes and other buildings were heavily damaged when the tsunami struck, almost without warning, along the rim of the Sunda Strait late on Saturday, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the disaster mitigation agency, said.

Thousands of residents were forced to evacuate to higher ground. By late afternoon on Sunday, the disaster agency had raised the death toll to 222, with 843 injured and 28 missing.

This year the vast archipelago, which sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," has suffered its worst death toll from disasters in over a decade. Earthquakes flattened parts of the tourist island of Lombok in July and August, and a double quake-and-tsunami killed more than 2,000 people on Sulawesi island in September.

Too many people living in areas that are dangerous. The northwestern part of the USA could get worse when yellow stone blows up. Hurricane Michael if it had hit in the same area would have also been devastating.

My only gripe of Indonesia is back in 2000 while I was active duty in the Marine Corps, we stoped in Malaysia (flying from Okinawa with 4 CH-53E helos, 4 C-130’s and 4 F/A-18’s) and flew a small det to Indonesia for humanaterian type work and their government was insistent that we have no weapons....like we were going to take over that shithole area we were helping...(terroists in the area to include the Abu Saiff, who had just taken American hostages in Palawan, The Philippines; the week before we arrived and RON’ed in Palawan because one of our 53’s broke down)
