A Marine, possible PTSD, had a couple run ins, one a possible like Baker act and it was determined he was OK, also he had been beat up in a bar at one time or another.

I don't understand how this could happen: aren't "high-capacity" magazines illegal in Kommifornia? Aren't guns illegal in a bar?

    //end "sarcasm"

One news report indicated he was using a 45 auto. Assuming that was correct, maybe he was in compliance with the mag capacity limitations.

This is staggeringly sad on so many different levels:

Nov 8 (Reuters) - The man suspected of killing 12 people in a bar in a Los Angeles suburb was a decorated Marine Corp machine gunner deployed in Afghanistan who had several prior brushes with law enforcement, police and Marine officials said on Thursday.

Ian David Long, who also died in the attack late Thursday, was 28 years old and lived in Newbury Park, a prosperous suburb of Californian bungalows and tidy front lawns, about 4 miles (6.4 km) from the Borderline Bar & Grill where the shooting took place.

Long joined the Marines in 2008 and rose to the rank of corporal before leaving active service in 2013, Joseph Butterfield, a Marine spokesman, wrote in an email.

He served in the war in Afghanistan for seven months beginning in late 2010, the Marine Corp said, and was awarded multiple ribbons, commendations and medals.

It was not immediately clear what Long did after leaving active duty.

At a news conference on Thursday, Sheriff Geoff Dean said police had responded to a minor disturbance call at Long's house in April.

"He was somewhat irate, acting a little irrationally," Dean said. The police called in a team of mental health specialists who decided that Long did not qualify to be involuntarily detained for mental health evaluation under state law.

A neighbor, who would only identify himself by his last name, Hanson, said Long lived with his mother.

"I mind my own business and they did theirs too," he said in a brief telephone interview. A woman in the background added: "He was kind of a loner."

Other neighbors said they did not recognize the suspect's name, adding that his mother would wave as she drove by as they watered their lawn.

An American flag hung on the garage at Long's home on Thursday as law enforcement gathered outside. A red pickup truck was parked in the driveway.

According to public records, Long appeared to be the grandson of H. Daryl Foley, a former U.S. Navy commander who spent 30 years in the service and died in 2010, according to a published obituary.

Long's mother, Colleen Long, has worked for more than eight years as an analyst for Dole Food Co, according to her social media profiles. The shooter was armed with a Glock 21 .45-caliber handgun that he purchased legally in Simi Valley, Dean said. But officers said it was likely that he had modified the gun with an extended magazine because typical handguns carry only 10 bullets.

A motive in the shooting was not immediately clear, Dean said. Officers with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also were on scene.

“We have no idea if there is a terrorism link or not,” the sheriff said.

The killer had run ins with the police previously.
https://www.foxnews.com/us/massive-police-response-after-reports-of-shooting-at-california-nightclub -- armed with a Glock 21 .45-caliber handgun with an illegal extended magazine -- opened fire on a packed California country music bar Wednesday night, killing 12 people, including a veteran sheriff's sergeant nearing retirement, officials said.

Authorities believe Ian David Long eventually turned the gun on himself, but not before the 28-year-old, dressed in all black, terrorized a crowd filled with college students at Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Long's body was found in an office near the entrance of the bar.
.............Sheriff Geoff Dean, who is set to retire on Friday, said Long may have suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and was known to law enforcement officials due to several unspecified "contacts" stretching back multiple years.

I read somewhere that he did a mag change and at least one mag was "illegally extended capacity". In Kommifornia, the Glock 21 standard mag of 13-rounds would be "illegal", or it could've been one of those Korean 26(?)-rounders...

Regardless, none of their asinine laws helped the victims. It only made them easier targets.

28 YO living in Moms house, drove her car to crime scene.

A news source stated six off-duty LE Officers were inside the establishment at the time of the attack no reference to any actions they may have taken. No metion if these officers had firearms with them in te Bar or if the fired. With murderer dead in an office near the door he entered through, he may have encountered resistance, all initial shots ma not have been his. Further, if the two responders entered and were in the proximate location of the murderer: there is a posibility friendly fire may have been directed at them. It was reported that shots were exchanged between the murderer and the two entering officers but there were also reports of smoke grenades, obviously confusion could occur. There going to need clear ballistic forensics on this one.
