Realistically, what’s your comfortable shooting distance, general calibers, 30-06, 30-30, 308, 270…. In reality?

Hunting or shooting targets.... hunting would require more precision to me & depend on the game, the gun & the weather.... Id shoot a deer out to 350-400 with one of my rifles but conditions have to be nearly perfect..... most of my deer caliber rifles are <300 yards... Id shoot varmint out to 600 with other rifles... I've no desire to just sling lead so I wouldnt make any shot if I didnt think I could hit the target reasonably... In ideal conditions, I'd shoot target well out there but dont have a 1k gun yet... IMO, in any longer distance shooting the gun would have to be capable first, then the shooter, then allow for weather.... my 30-06=300, my 30-30=100, no .308,no 270, 7mm Mag 400, .243=275-300 and similiar....

I like my chances a lot better than I like your chances out to 400 with my primary deer rifle chambered in .308, even out to 500 I would consider the odds in my favor.

    Comfortable is all relative though.

I don't follow? are you just trying to compare ballistics or something else?

    interesting so far
animal, I wont shoot more than 1-300 yards, I don't want to wound the animal. Target, shoot, I'll sit there all day until I figure out the angle to lob it in there... lol

At known distance at the range I can group 3 inches at 400 yards pretty much on demand, I've never to the best of my knowledge taken a shot at game at over 200 or so yards. I guess you could say that was as far as I'd be comfortable attempting a shot.

A 7mm Rem Mag is extremely capable at 1000yds. I shot my Browning at that range using a handloaded Hornady 162gr BTHP and later, the A-Max. Later,I switched to a 30-378Wby Mag.
The long distance thing is great fun. I guess what has me scratching my head is . . . Why all of a sudden has the 6.5Creedmoor emerged as the cooliest bang in town.
But in full disclosure . . . I used to do OK with my 7mag . . . and then a little better than that with the Weatherby. --- SAWMAN

My hunting rifle is a Tikka in .270wsm. Not sure of the gun/chambering ability, but my ability is limited to under 300 yards. (GASP) I’m probably the only one on the forum that can’t shoot steel out to 1,000.

No, just saying I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of a volley at 400-500 yards. Morally, I wouldn't shoot at a deer that far on the regular (I have taken a doe at 412, and as someone else said, the conditions were perfect)

A man sized piece of steel, I do believe I would hit it fairly easily at 500 with my deer rifle. (Tikka t3 .308, w/ Swarovski glass)

As far as hunting goes . . . a prime concern for the 6.5Creedmmor shooters should be - -> how much energy will my bullet deliver at the longer distances and what will it's expansion characteristics be at the velocity that it strikes the animal. ---- SAWMAN

Why would that be a concern? You hunt with a .300blk quite a bit, and the 6.5cm is superior to that cartridge in every way.

Some people can use their skills as a hunter to put a bullet where it is supposed to be at the intended ranges.
On the other hand, people like you need extreme velocity to do a "real" hunters work for him.
Tell me sir . . . how much expierance do you have with a 300BLK ??
    Thought so !! --- SAWMAN

Not much man... only got 4 rifles chambered in it and killed about 30 hogs so far. But I'm no expert.

:D it can't rain on a bullet in flight....but the additional moisture in the air may cause you some problems.

If you know your drop and conditions it is not too hard to figure out LR stuff on paper before you send it....the first thing you gotta do is believe you can do it.

I still remember the day I put 2 rounds in the 2" center of a clay bird at 500 yards and watched the bullet strikes. It has been on for me since then. I did slay a Dragon at 100 yards once using hold offs ...perfect center mass shot...another milestone for me...even got pictures.

It is rather hard to see bullet strikes at 900 yards with an 14X scope, which is probably the higher end of what most use for hunting scopes. Several of the chamberings you mentioned have pretty easy 1K yard possibilities for shooting steel. Hunting would need a slightly different mindset. The farest I have personally seen a deer taken is 606 yards with a 6.5WSM...don't know why it couldn't be done with a .270WSM if you knew the drop.

as loud as a .260 or .308 is striking steel at 1K I have to wonder just how much penetration you would get on a thin skinned animal.

know your equipment, you conditions, and your capabilities (they are probably stronger than you believe) and nothing is as close to impossible.

Pretty sure a .22 isn’t in the mix of what yawwl are discussing, but I gotta add my bit of fun with my new/old rifle fun at ERGC range.

After quickly getting bored with one hole groups at 25yrds and a little bigger at 50, I dialed the rear sight up 30 clicks was suprised to bust clay targets on the back bank ~140yds.
THEN proceded to pick off the jiblets that were left on the bank!

Of course I’m not getting a hit every single shot, but just about!

    Targets or Hunting?
For hunting, I'm very comfortable shooting anything that breathes out to 180 yards with either 7m-08, .243 or .308. Varmints with .204 to 200 yards. But I will shoot out to 300 yds without hesitation if the conditions warrant the shot. But really, where do you need more than 300 yards for hunting on public property?
For targets, I shot expert with m16 (300m) peephole flip-sight back in the day. So I ain't skeered. Just don't like wasting ammo.

Right now three hundred yards is the farthest distance I have to shoot at. I normally do not feel the drive to hunt animals anymore. It would be very hard for me legally to justify shooting a human at extreme range, but long range shooting still holds an allure for me.
Being able to hit a target with a rifle by some is seen as the ability to exert your will over a distance. Sort of analogous to a god smiting the wicked with thunder lol. To call down a ton of kinetic energy is sort of awesome at the object of your choice. Primitives when first confronted by firearms sometimes think that the fire sticks are the thunder of the gods.
I have some Designated Marksman Rifle projects on hold and also a sniper rifle on hold along with others. Just have more important things to do at the moment. Most of the guns are in .308.
