The commercially reloaded cartridge got some mixture of rifle and pistol powder. Factory had been doing a run of pistol cartridges and when switching over to rifle reloading did not remove all pistol powder from the charging equipment.
Shooter was not seriously injured from this catastrophic event.

The 5.56 nato I believe to be the hottest military small arms cartridge ever used relative to normal peak pressures. But still, even with pistol powder being use, I am really amazed to see what happened to that bolt. The bolt is split and literally the head of that cartridge case really must have released tremendous pressure.

I do not know since the name was not stated by Ian or Carl on the InRange episode that showed the picture of that AR.

Also curious as to the company. Hopefully more will come out soon. Thank God no serious injuries, looks like it could have easily killed the operator.

This is all a good review of what not to fire in Ar-15s. I just found out that 300 black out will chamber in 5.56 chambers. here is an ar pistol in 5.56 that fired a 300 bo.
I do not think I will get a 300 bo.

Some Winchester M855 was recalled a few years ago for wrong propellant. Its not unusual that its not all tracked and returned.

Aluma-Hyde clear spray grit would give you a different feel on the mag so you could recognize even in the dark if you though it might be an issue for you.
I have never owned a 20 ga either. Just too easy to make a mistake. I want simple and safe. If I want 30 in the AR I will go 7.62x39. It is not just mags. With my old eye vision, just too easy to get one in the wrong mag.

Here's how it looks when a 300BLK is fired in a 5.56! It's also easy to fire a .380 in a 9mm but it's not catastrophic, all it does is it won't cycle the action (don't ask me how I know )

I have successfully fired some 380 handloads in a straight blowback 9 mm. It was really soft shooting and it was done by mistake. The 380 case was badly bulged for the lower part of the shell casing.

Hummm. No expert but I'm thinking there's is more to this story. These things are designed to take much more pressure than they are rated for and it's likely we will never know what really happened?

    From SAAMI:
    CARTRIDGE, DEFINITIVE PROOF
A cartridge loaded to specific pressures higher than service loads. Used only for testing assembled firearms or elements of firearms which contain the primary firing pressure.

This does not mean that whatever powder type and charge weight that fits in the cartridge will be no be catastrophic. Proof testing is basically exceeding the SAAMI Spec to a degree that confirms the item will safely function "within the SAAMI Limits".

Its actually simple to spike a cartridge which is why you should not attempt to fire rounds you find at the range or on the battlefield.
