I can tell you what I have been told it is but I can't find anything out there that substantiates my suspicion. So I thought I would give it a shot on here. It measures 12 inches long by 7 inches wide by 8 inches deep and is all stainless steel. IMG_1250.JPG IMG_1251.JPG IMG_1252.JPG IMG_1253.JPG

Looks like it's double wall insulated, is it? If so might be for transporting organs for transplant?

Looks like what the chow hall used to send hot meals to the flight line

Bingo that is what I was told it was for but knowing this it would make a great cooler or lunch box for someone. And yes it is double wall insulated.

If that was the case it is mighty small for that, you couldn't put much in it. It is just the right size for a six pack and a little ice.

Back when I was in the Big One, the Germans use to carry their lunch in from mess hall to field in containers similar to that.

Not an exact match, but pretty close:
    Google "french caldorinox storage box"

Have you tested it with some ice to see how long it lasts?

Edit: RidgeRunner was quicker by a minute... :)

I don't know what that item is, but it reminds me of the time I bought a stainless steel thermos for a friend of mine for his birthday. He unwrapped it and asked what it was and I said "it's a thermos, it's for keeping things hot and cold. You can use it to carry your lunch." A couple days later I saw him with the thermos and asked what he had in it. He replied "coffee and a popsicle."

Looks like it's stackable. The "carry strap" may just be like those ammo packets have: to make it easier to remove from a larger box of a bunch of those containers.
Might've been used to transport medical stuff (blood, fluids, medicine), and got repurposed by soldiers and civilians for food containers.

I'm curious how well it still insulates. :)

I think you may be correct on them being stackable and able to be carried in a larger container. The strap I think is to enable it being carried from the shoulder "purse" style.

Your right what we used looked like that but when I went back and read the measurements I realized that what we used were much larger

If you don't mind me asking where did you get it? I'm betting it's fairly old and not a lot of them were made, I'm 48 and never seen anything like it.

Don't mind at all I found it in an antique store here in Alabama about 5 years ago. I like strange things so here it is.

Food from the main chow hall to the troups in the field.
They used similar containers to feed the instructors while in the field during S.E.R.E. School exercises. --- SAWMAN
