A buddy and I got drawn for the alligator hunt this year. We were wondering where we could take it to get the meat processed and hide tanned? On the FWC website the closest location listed is south of Tallahassee and we would like someone closer that we could use. Thanks!

Tallahassee is going to be the closest.

If you want a trophy mount of the skin (hard tan) I would recommend getting in touch with Chad Cooper of Coopers taxidermy (chumuckla)... if you want a soft tan, to make leather products, skin it yourself, flesh it and salt it. Then send it to Sebring tannery in central Florida.

I'll say this, there is nothing cheap when it comes to alligators. Me personally, I would lob the head off that joker, cut what meat you want, and chunk the rest. There is nothing fast about skinning one out. I do several a year and a big one (9ft+) takes me a few hours.

Ollies Taxidermy would do an excellent job! 850-748-7022, local and has been to school 3o years ago to do it, his work shows it!

Gators are a PIA to skin, lie John said it takes hours. I processed my own and prefer to grind up a bunch of it with some smoked pork bacon ends and make burger/sausage out of it...

I thought aligators were protected in Florida? Damn good eating meat. I had it in alabama. At the time i dont think they were protected there.
    Negative. Highly regulated though.
