Can it get any better, any Faster? Guess only time will tell.
I was reading in F&S (july'18, i think it was), and there is a write up on Hornady's 6.5 PRC (Precision Rifle Cartridge). Says it's a new short mag, (parent-case) .30 RCM (300RCM) necked down to 6.5.
The 147g match bullets hit 2,900 fps and the 143g hunting bullets hit 2,960 fps.
Online search shows it stays at supersonic speeds beyond 1,300 yds. At 1,000 yards, bullet drop is only about 24.5 moa and will hit in 1.4 seconds with retained velocity of more than 1,600 fps. It's 5% faster than the 300 win mag with 68% less recoil.
Anyone else read about it and/or anyone shoot this particular round, if so, what do you think about it?

Here's a good write up on it from Shooting Illustrated. https://www.shootingillustrated.com/articles/2018/2/27/review-hornady-65-prc-cartridge/

    my .260 runs 2894 with 129LRX
my 6.5WSM knocks on the door of 3300 with 142s. Uses about +8MOA at 600 yards. It will go in and out of a deer at that distance 4 times...in the back of the rib cage..through the opposing shoulder...into one side of the neck and out the other...with a 142 SMK. I bet that barrel on that one will last longer. Close to a 6.5-284. I'm still playing with mine.

    Laws of deminishing returns.
As with any "caliber" - - -> powder capacity + extreme heat + bullet velocity ='s bbl/throat erosion.
Each shooters choice. Most find, after the newness wears off a little, they will give up some velocity to save a good/great/expensive bbl or to pay for a re-bbl.
Deep pockets . . . go for it. Medium depth pockets (or expecting some poon within the next few months) go a little slower and simply click that expensive scope up another few clicks (MOA).
This, remembering, people shoot a thousand yard match with 45-70's. ---- SAWMAN

That can be said for any over bore really. Even if the barrel life was 1K rounds and you used 100 for load development that would still give you 900 round of good life. Taking 900 deer, elk, or antelope at 700+ yards out...none of which I could do with my .45-70. There is a place for these types of rifles.

The 6.5PRC is very close to a 7SAUM in case dimensions just with better BC and pushing things to the limits is what many shooters spend a lifetime doing. When you start pushing 6.5 bullets at this kind of speed the BCs are well over .700 as is some of the newer 7mm bullets.

There are other viable options already out there that are not nearly as severe on barrels. 6.5-06, 6.5-06AI, 6.5 Rem Mag, .264 Win Mag in the 3K fps range

    6.5-300Wby Mag is another speedster.
But personally,I would opt for short and fat vs tall and skinny. My decission has come from working with a couple of the PPC's. Shorter powder column is more efficient IMO. ---- SAWMAN
    ADDED - - -> Best example that I can think of,that everyone can relate to is a 308Win compared to a .30-'06.

yes...I have fired a 7mm Win Mag @1K and that thing gets there in a hurry too.

I think that is one of the reasons I chose the 6.5WSM and I don't care that much for working with belted cases

I received a message that Jhunter asked what bullet has a G1 BC of over .700 and that would be a Sierra 150gr. MatchKing # 1755 BC is .713 above 1760 fps. It does require a 1:75 twist rate. You may or may not be able to overcome stability issues running them in a 1:8 twist if you moly coated them....you would have to try it.

My apologies. I had a brain lapse with 6mm on my mind. Yes 1-8” works with the 150’s. I have had success with reloader 26 in the 6.5 Creedmoor and PRC. I’m anxious to compare a 1-7.5” next to the 1-8” 858221A3-A087-4705-BC62-925751BDF181.jpg

In the "old days" I owned a 7STW. Was pretty fast AND accurate. It was chambered in Ruger #1 with a 1:8 twist bbl. Using the 162gr HPBT (the A-MAX were not made back then),I killed several deer at the longer ranges while living in Maine. ---- SAWMAN
