When I go out walking on my wooded property I usually have my sks slung across my shoulder, my glock 19 on my hip, a 3" maxam in my pocket and a big stick I pick up along the way.

I think I’m far more likely to run into a two legged problem than a four even in the woods, though I’ve got a knack for crossing paths with whatever poisonous snake resides where I’m at.

So when I go stomping in wilderness, which isn’t often anymore, it’s whatever dirty8 is my favorite at the moment, whatever knife is nearest my hand out the door, and if it’s gonna be anything deeper than the parking lot at black water I’ll dig out the oak staff from the shed(read my tendency to meet moccasins and copperheads).
I wouldn’t pick a stick in lue of a firearm(of course, full disclosure, I keep whatever dirty8 is my current favorite on the sink when I’m in the bathroom), but if I ever don a pack again it’s gonna be mandatory. Even in my teens I could tell the difference backpacking with a staff and without, and both my knees and back are a lot more worse for wear now. But that’s me,

You can’t convince me crossing a stream is easier without one though.

A good walking stick is awesome. A million in one uses. My favorite ones were made out of dried and lacquered bamboo with a rubber cup protecting the bottom.

People going up the mountains somewhere in europe to the summer pastures. Note the sticks. Even the women are wearing practical footware.
