Just picked up a police trade in model 10. It has a silver metal tag on the side that covers the S&W logo. The tag is from the NY DCS (department of corrections s...). I know a model 10 is not exactly a collectible since there were so many made, but does the tag add any value? If not, it is not that attractive and I would just as soon remove it.

Do not remove. It is part of the gun’s history. Some people collect such marked firearms and some do not. I think it is neat as such per the pics I have seen before they were sold out.

Great shooter, enjoy it, shoot it, let the plate stay with the pistol and pictures please.

I think the plate makes your gun more unique. Keep it on as long as it does not impair function. I also agree for the call for pictures of you new gun.

Shot it today. Works great. Feels like it has had some trigger work done. Very smooth. Here are a couple pics.

    About time,
What -# is it? I’ve got a 10-7 snub that everyone says must have had trigger work, perhaps it’s just old Smith’s really are made better....

Great find, Russ! Glad it shoots well for you. Did the holster and the speed loader holder come with it?

It is a 10-8. They had a 10-6, but it was pretty rough looking. Holster, speed loaders and pouches all part of the package.

Local shop find or online wholesaler? Looks like a fine revolver, it will out live us all. Shoot it up

$299 or around there? Pardon if it's rude to ask, but I like guns. :) m16

Definitely keep the tag on it. It adds value big time. There are people out there who will go out of the way to find the old guns they were issued with their prior agency. Just as a example, I myself would pay premium for a S&W 5906 or S&W mod 10 or 15 that have FDOC markings. I personally, know a retired NYDOCS officer who'd kill for one.

Those model S&W 38 revolvers hold up extremely well. When I worked for the FDOC I got to know the armorers real well. They told me that when they sold off the revolvers some of them had about 400,000 rounds through them.
