Found a few wheat pennies, and an old worn out mercury dime. Just purchased a sand scoop going to try my hand at some surf detecting at Pensacola beach and along Perdido Key beaches.

Going to try to get out to the beach on this upcoming Sunday rain or shine. Hopefully I can find enough loot with the AT Pro in the future to purchase a pulse induction unit (perhaps a MineLab Excalibur II).

This hobby fascinates me and I tried it for a while. It’s just too darn slow and I never found anything but pop tops and crushed beer cans.
I need a detector that’s about 6’ across that I can pull with my 4 wheeler so I can cover some ground.

It can be very frustrating but it just takes some time getting to know your detector. I can now generally tell by sound versus looking at meter if item is worth digging I spent some time burying items I wanted to find (silver coins, jewelry) in my yard and trash (pop tops and cans) to be able to discern what a good signal sounds and looks like versus a junk one. Haven’t found any crazy hordes, but have cleaned a few dirty trash filled parks pulled a few silver coins, a bunch of wheat pennies (still waiting to find a 1909 S VDB) lol

are public beaches ok to try? no permit needed?

wonder if you hit a 6 ' wide area with a strong tone positive for gold and silver, what would one do?

Rather than post in the Christmas thread, I figure I would bump this old thread. My parents live on a chunk of family land that has been in the family since the late 1800’s. It is near Foley. There is a story of an old schoolhouse that my great grandfather burned down in the late 1800’s. Supposedly he got tired of going so he burned it. We have been metal detecting in the area we think it was located and have found 2 horse shoes, part of a cast iron pan and s few other tid bits.
Last Monday my son and I looked for a bit and found a handle, an old shotgun shell and an 8-point basket rack shed. I hope to get back over Monday and try to do some bush hogging to clear more area to “swing”. The shotgun shell says Winchester Repeater no. 12. According to my search these were produced between 1896 and 1938.

Those are some really cool finds! Been a bit since I’ve done any detecting. What make and model detector are you using?

I just may hit a few parks as my new year resolution (not to work on days off). As usual if anyone wants to tag along I’m thinking of checking some of the local parks in Pensacola.

Very cool. Watch for coal and clinker dust. Broken glass and pottery, plates is another good sign. If ya do locate the school find the outhouse and dig it.
Old maps can be handy too.
Scout using all metal mode, mark where you have beeps. Later go back where you had the most hits an start hunting. Overlapping your sweeps by 50% fight the urge to whip and run.
    Just some tips, ymmv.

It would be quite the adventure, problem would be finding a way to liquidate such a horde without folks asking questions and then the tax man / countries trying to lay claim to stolen / heritage / historical claims.

I have two brother-in-laws on my wife’s side that are into detecting pretty heavy. From what I have heard and seen the chance of finding real treasure at our beaches is slim to none. There are people out there detecting about every day and there has been for years.
