Right-wing firebrand Ann Coulter, whose 2016 campaign bookIn Trump We Trust touted the many virtues of the Republican nominee, is having second, third, and possibly even fourth thoughts about Donald J. Trump.

“I knew he was a shallow, lazy ignoramus, and I didn’t care,” Coulter admitted to an audience largely composed of College Republicans and a few hecklers at Columbia University on Tuesday night.

It was the sort of anti-Trump invective that Coulter would share privately with pals, including this reporter, over a wine-soaked dinner during the first year of the new administration, but in recent weeks she has increasingly voiced her displeasure in public forums.

This time, Coulter—wearing her trademark slinky black cocktail dress, accessorized by a sparkling, handcuff-sized bracelet—repeatedly trashed her former hero during a supposed debate in Columbia’s Roone Arledge Cinema with her good friend, neoliberal blogger Mickey Kaus (modeling a plain blue suit and blue patterned tie).

The ostensible focus of the conversation—moderated byKevin Can Wait showrunner Rob Long, a rare Hollywood conservative (suitless, unshaven)—was immigration policy. It’s a topic on which Coulter and Kaus largely agree (namely, curb the flow of indigent, ill-educated, unskilled arrivals and get rid of the “illegals” who depress the wages of working-class Americans). Also on the agenda was Trump’s apparent lack of interest in fulfilling his central campaign promise to erect a “big, beautiful wall” on the U.S. border with Mexico.

The debate also touched upon the opioid crisis—again, a catastrophe created by “Mexicans.” Kaus, in contrast to Coulter, argued that the United States can and should honor a long-standing tradition of admitting a reasonable number of refugees. Coulter, meanwhile, approvingly cited the strict-enforcement positions of the late Democratic congresswoman Barbara Jordan of Houston, the first African-American woman elected from the South, who argued for restricting the hiring of undocumented workers—in the national interest—when she chaired the U.S. Commission on Immigration in the 1990s.

Both Coulter and Kaus agreed that, in large part due to an “anti-Trump surge,” the GOP is likely to lose the House and possibly even the Senate in the 2018 midterm elections.

“It kind of breaks my heart,” Coulter acknowledged of her disappointment with the president, and she recounted a profanity-laced shouting match she had with Trump in the Oval Office last year over what she saw as his lackluster follow-through on immigration policy. “He’s not giving us what he promised at every single campaign stop.”

Long’s opening question to Kaus: “Mickey, if a couple of years ago you had written a book entitled In Trump We Trust, would you just feel like a total idiot right now?”

“I’d be pretty disappointed. I might even be tweeting nasty things about our president,” replied Kaus, a dutiful Democrat whose vote for Trump in November 2016 was his first for a Republican presidential or any other kind of candidate. “He’s been completely feckless,” Kaus added, noting that illegal immigration from Mexico declined in the initial months of Trump’s presidency but then “started to go back up as people started to realize that Trump’s a paper tiger.”

It was four nights after Coulter had aimed a bitter Twitter blast at the 45th president of the United States—who had complained last Friday, after signing the $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill that contained generous funding for liberal social and cultural programs favored by Democrats, including the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, but zero dollars for his vaunted wall, that he would never do such a thing again.

“Yeah, because you’ll be impeached,” Coulter had tweeted to her 1.94 million followers, one of whom is Trump. (Later during the debate, she repeated a report that the president was seriously considering vetoing the spending legislation, but after White House chief of staff John Kelly explained that such a veto would mean missing his planned weekend at Mar-a-Lago, Trump said “f--- it!” and signed the bill instead.)

Near the end of the evening, Long asked Coulter if her prescription for Trump’s shortcomings “is less cheerleading and more tough love.”

    “Tough love, yeah,” Coulter agreed.

“So you are in favor of giving the president a spanking?” Long quipped—the night’s only reference, and a veiled one at that, to the Stormy Daniels situation.

At which Coulter laughed and said, “I do not remind him of his daughter!”

While I may not agree with her principles, she at least has the balls to stand by them, which is more than one can say about the object of her wrath.

When is Mexico going to pay for the wall? When is it going to be built? When is Obamacare going to be repealed and replaced? When will he get us out of the wars in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan? When will he rebuild the nation's infrastructure? When will he defeat ISIS? When will he bring the budget under control? Where is the 4% economic growth? How about an explanation on what happened to the troops in Niger? How about an explanation of the helicopter that got shot down in Syria last week??

He’s not giving us what he promised at every single campaign stop.”

He has dropped the ball on everything.

His singular legislative accomplishment? Massive tax cuts for the wealthy and big corporations (and throwing the commoners an extra tank of gas per month to make them think they got the better part of the deal) that are driving the country deeper into debt every single day.

What about "draining the swamp"? Hows that going?

Blizzard of ethics complaints filed against Trump administration

The complaints, obtained by NBC News, cite Executive Order No. 13770, which effectively barred former lobbyists from being appointed, without a waiver, to governmental positions in which they would manage issues they'd lobbied on within the past two years.

Last summer, Public Citizen identified 36 lobbyists who'd been tapped for government jobs dealing with issues they'd lobbied on, and only six of those appointees have received waivers since then, the group said.

"These 30 apparent violations of Trump's own ethics rules are only the tip of the iceberg," said Craig Holman, co-author of the June 2017 report and lobbyist for Public Citizen's Congress Watch division.

Holman added that the Trump administration had issued the waivers only to appointees whose apparent violations had received attention and scrutiny through media reports.

He is into his second year of his presidency and he hasn't even started yet on the eminent domain process that will be required to take hundreds of thousands of acres of land from private citizens necessary for the wall to be built. Such a process will take years, if not decades, as it winds its way through the court system to most likely the supreme court, for a taking of private property on a massive scale like that has never been seen before in this country. Yet he hasn't even started on this yet.

This should tell you all you need to know about "building the wall".

This thread had to be removed for a while to be cleaned up. Keep in mind this line in the Terms Of Use:

Users will conduct themselves on the Gulf Coast Gun Forum in a respectful manner, inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements will result in removal from the Gulf Coast Gun Forum.

We've had a lot of borderline and not so borderline disrespectful comments lately. I personally think that there are many better options for people to discuss politics than this forum, but it would be difficult to enforce a ban of political talk completely, since a lot of the current political focus is related to firearms. If all you want to talk about is politics, please go elsewhere to do it.

We moderators know that there are a handful of members that like to stir the pot and bait people into arguing with them. Let's all just keep in mind that we're here to talk about firearms and that firearms owners come from all walks of life. If you cannot respond in a respectful manner, then don't respond at all. Since this is becoming more of a problem, the moderation team is going to start cracking down and handing out harsher punishments to any who do not comply.

I'll make it simple, trolling is disrespectful, inflammatory and malicious to the other members of the forum. From today forward when I come across a member trolling I'll start handing out vacations and if it becomes an ongoing issue I'll break out the ban hammer. The same goes to those who feel compelled to reply disrespectfully to the trolling. Simply report it and we'll determine if it is or isn't a violation. A few folks on both sides of the fence can't seem to help but to piss on the electric fence.

I like trolling people that post "bait" threads, IMO they bring it on themselves. I don't get offended by these bait threads, to be honest it makes me laugh and I'm here for entertainment anyway and guns.

So back on point. Ann Coulter is merely expressing the frustration and rage that most Republican and indeed most Americans must feel about our president. In Coulter's case she is angry because of the 1.3 Trillion dollar budget that does not include one penny for DACA or the damn Wall. In fact, I am certain that no one knows what is in that hastily compiled and quickly signed bill that has just spent 1.3 Trillion of our tax dollars on who knows what. However, I have not heard a single thing about any portion the bill that protects or secures our gun rights.

For purposes of this board this seems to be the biggest issue. Republicans (the gun party) has been in control of both houses, the executive branch and the judiciary for 14 months and not one law expanding or protecting gun rights. In fact, we were one late night closed door meeting with the NRA away from losing the bulk of our rights in favor of a Clinton-est "Assault Weapon Ban".

What can we do about this, and why am I throwing these facts in your face? Once again Ann Coulter (who I hate by the way ) gives us the answer "Tough Love". Trump supporters, that would be many of you, have to call him on his bullshit. You have to hold him accountable for his betrayals of your trust. Ding him in the polls. He no long should be allowed to get away with cries of "fake news" or "alternative facts". Bust him when he lies. Jeer him at his rallies. Make him shape up. Show him "tough love" Because he is acting like a spoiled brat. Firing the adults in the room who disagree with him, and replacing them with loons whose only qualifications are that they agree with him. Take for example John, would I steer you wrong about Iraq, Bolton. Trump needs to be discipline and more importantly he needs to be surrounded by folks who will stand up to him when he goes off on a tirade.

Some of you think that Trump will honor his obligations to you because he promised he would in a campaign rally. He did not honor his obligations to his three wives (hell he even cheated on his playboy mistress with a porn star) . He did not honor his obligations the vast majority of his creditors (he even failed to pay the girls dance team that performed at his Pensacola rally) what makes you think you are special? You were lied to and you have every right to be angry about it and you have every right to demand that he honor his promises to you.

We can no longer console ourselves by saying "he was better than Crooked Hillary". Instead you have to realize that the greatest threat to our gun rights is the man in the oval office, not the grandmother sitting at home writing her memoirs. The Republicans are going to lose the House and possibly the Senate, because of Trump, and we are going to lose our gun rights unless we get him under control now. Join his twitter feed and push back next time he goes on a early morning potty tweets.

By the way, with the exception of twitter, I am already doing this. But he does not listen to me because I am not one of his supporters (apparently being an American is not enough) but many of y'all are in the Trump Club. You know the secret passwords and handshakes and whatnot. So speak up and tell the emperor that he has no clothes before we are all left feeling naked without our guns.

Bill Clinton is a rapist and pedofile and media silence, Trump nails a porn star 12 years ago and liberals lose their minds. Bill got Hillary and Monica, Trump got Stormy and Melania. Who's the better decision maker here?

I can agree partially with what you've said Jeb. Yes, we as the "gun society" have been relatively quiet about defending our rights or even being on the offense and going after the NFA act and/or the reach of the ATF. We certainly need to be more proactive and not reactive.
Hillary would've already eroded way more than Trump could think and the facts your stating about his personal life are insignificant when compared to the political arena as a whole. Most of the politicians in this country are pigs...in any application of the term. No one likes to use the term, lesser of two evils, but we've been doing this in voting for quite some time.

This is exactly the problem that I was talking about. You and everyone else in this country know that Trump had sex with these women. You know that despite the fact that Trump and the White House have been denying these affairs for almost a year. So you know that Trump is lying and you know that he is co-opting government officials to lie to the American people, but you are ok with it because his mistresses were hotter than Clinton's. Really?

This thread is not about his infidelity - it is about his constant and repeated lies, his unwillingness to take a stand to support those who voted him into office. Most importantly it is about his supporters willingness to forgive all because . . . . hell I don't know why.

Even Ann Coulter, who wrote a book praising Trump not a year ago is disgusted with how Trump has mishandled the unprecedented opportunity he was given by the American people to really make a positive change in this country. Instead he waste time picking petty fights and making inflammatory remarks on twitter. He spends his time campaigning for 2020 or golfing in Florida, rather than pushing the agenda of his supporters.

Until his supporters rise up and demand that Trump keep his promises and protect our gun rights, we are in danger of losing those rights.

Trump was voted in to be a breath of fresh air, to "drain the swamp" He has done nothing of the sort. His cabinet members have repeatedly violated ethical standards, betrayed the public trust and misused public funds. Many have been fired because of their misdeeds but not all. Remember these were, according to Trump, the "best people" in America for the jobs. They have proven to be anything but that. Trump has not reformed the culture of self dealing in Washington, if anything he has only intensified it. Did y'all read about how Kushner's family business received half a billion dollar loan from two financial institutions a day after members of the institutions met with Kushner in the White House for a private meeting? He had been trying to get a loan for a while, with no success, suddenly his father in law gets elected president, Kushner gets made Czar of everything and loans just pour into his family business. Did you know he also tried to get a loan from Quatar after the election? They refused, suddenly Quatar is on our countries black list. This blatant self dealing has to be concerning to you guys, right?

I understand that we cannot change the vote, but we can hold politicians accountable for not keeping campaign promises. Don't give him a pass simply because he claims to be on our side- because really he is only on his own side.

Were you this outspoken about Obama and his BS? Can you say $100 Million vacation to Africa. Or is the hate limited to Trump and the Republicans? Just wondering if you are fair and equitable with the "facts".

Yes on Obama. My "hate" is not limited to Trump. Don't hate the Republicans but I am disappointed in the leadership for not leading. As for the "facts" I don't know why those are in quotes in your post. No debate that the facts i have posted about are true. Do we have a wall. Was obama care repealed? the list goes on and on and on.

Good to hear you provide an equal opportunity. I put facts in quotes because a great many things we hear and read are not confirmed facts. So we don't always have the "facts". Im sure as an attorney you can appreciate that.

Dear Lord, what is this world coming to. I find myself in the very rare position of agreeing with a lawyer. I hate to say it but Jeb is right. Trump is a lying, friggin idiot. He has done exactly what I feared he would do when I voted for him but I just could not bring myself to vote for Hitlery. We were fooled and it is going to cost conservatives big time in the middle election. They may indeed lose control of both Houses.

We need to raise our voices to our elected officials and let them know what we expect. We need to let the Republican party know that we are tired of sorry choices with the same old retreads. That is what got us Trump. An idiot who banged a porn star (Some people may call me a whore) over his wife who looks better on a bad day than Stormy would on a good day.

Thanks for your honesty on this topic. I do know it was difficult but as you point out, only by admitting that the ship is on the wrong path (even if it got there by good intentions) can we begin to start to correct it.

So there is no need to panic or to consult a psychiatrist. Every so often I am right. Think of it as the lunar eclipse of arguments. It is bound to happen every few years or so. The best thing to do under these circumstances is to get some hot apple pie with vanilla ice cream. Enjoy this while reading a gun rag or if necessary watching a youtube gun show - say TenJeeps. Soon you will feel better.
