"British police launched a murder investigation Friday after an autopsy revealed that a Russian exile who was critical of Vladimir Putin was strangled in his home.

Nikolay Glushkov, whose body was found Monday, died as a result of "compression to the neck," London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

Glushkov's death was a eerie echo of his friend Boris Berezovsky, an exiled Russian oligarch and an outspoken critic of Putin who was found in 2013 with a rope around his neck — and whose death was initially a suspected suicide. It was reclassified as unexplained.

Glushkov also once testified in court against the billionaire Roman Abramovich, a Putin ally who owns the Chelsea Football Club, an English soccer team.

Berezovsky was a close friend of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko, who died from radioactive poisoning in 2006. An inquiry by British investigators concluded that his death was the work of the Russian state and was probably green-lighted by Putin himself.

On Friday, British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said Britain's quarrel was not with the Russian people but with the Kremlin."

Putin is out of control and seems to think he can get away with anything

    He kinda can.
He invaded sovereign nations, starts civil wars, facilitates civil wars, hacks foreign power grids/political party emails, imprisons Russian political adversaries and this isn't the first assassination of a Russian in the U.K. this month.

Former Clinton Cabinet member and current military analyst for NBC and MSNBC General Barry McCaffrey? Oh, OK.

Former Clinton Cabinet member and current military analyst for NBC and MSNBC General Barry McCaffrey? Oh, OK.

Barry Richard McCaffrey (born November 17, 1942), is a former United States Army General and current news commentator, professor and business consultant.

He received three Purple Heart medals for injuries sustained during his service in Vietnam, two Silver Stars for valor, and two Distinguished Service Crosses — the second-highest U.S. Army award for valor.

His combat tours included action in the Dominican Republic with 82nd Airborne Division in 1965, advisory duty with Army of the Republic of Vietnam from 1966–67, and company command with 1st Cavalry Division from 1968–69. General McCaffrey's peacetime assignments included tours as an instructor at U.S. Military Academy from 1972–75, Assistant Commandant at U.S. Army Infantry School; Deputy U.S. Representative to NATO; Assistant to the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS); and Director of Strategic Plans and Policy, Joint Chiefs of Staff.

    Yup, that guy.

I wonder why you left out his decades of military service, including several years of combat, and all of his military decorations, including several medals awarded for valor, in your description of him?

He was a General, figured it was a given he had years of military service. Doesn't mean he's not a partisan commentator now.

Now I wonder why you chose to talk about the general instead of the originally posted topic of the thread which was that Putin is out control, committing all sorts of violations of international norms and laws, and the fact that he doesn't have to worry about the United States interfering in any of it because Trump is unable or unwilling to do anything about it.

Agree Putin is out of control. But besides the sanctions announced Thursday, I doubt the Ukrainians receiving anti-tank missiles or the hundred or so (some reports as high as 200-300) dead Russian mercenaries in Syria would think the Trump administration is doing nothing.

Maybe. It's gotta be better than a plastic re-set button anyway.

Interesting that you would choose the gag gift reset button to compare Donald Trump's lack of action to, instead of the facts that Obama ordered the expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats, closed two rural estates reportedly used by Russian spies, and enacted sanctions against dozens of Russian entities and persons.

Here is one article of many on the subject, if you were unaware of this:

Obama slaps Russia with expulsions and broad sanctions for meddling in the U.S. election

By the way, if anyone cares to gain a better understanding of Putin and why he acts the way he does, Frontline has produced a very good 2 part, 2 hour documentary on Putin's background, his rise to power, and the world events that have shaped his thinking and policy over the years.

    Most enlightening.

Looks like Putin will win re-election for another 6 years. Not surprising, but it does mean that we are going to have to deal with him for a long time

So go find a retired general who says the opposite and it'll change your mind, right? Or no, because that particular retired general says what you've already decided is correct.

Your appeal to authority doesn't sway anyone to think differently. Trump accused Putin of the assassination.

Putin is the Russian liberal partys leader, or so it would seem from his tactics and methods.

If you don't agree with the General's explanation for Trump's inaction on this subject, then please provide a competing explanation for it.

Because Trump basically reiterating Obama's existing sanctions (and then not enforcing them anyway, rendering them moot) is to my mind, a wholly and completely insufficient response to a chemical weapons attack on a NATO member's nation by a hostile foreign power, and will once again, lead that hostile foreign power to believe that committing a similar attack against the United States will not be met with a forceful response either.

We now know that Russia has infiltrated our air traffic control systems and our utility grids. The amount of harm that they can do to the civilian population is staggering. Bullies like Putin cannot be appeased, they have to be confronted, challenged, and put back on their heels.

There is a reason that Putin wanted Trump to win. He knows that Trump does not have the spine to do what is necessary to protect the West from Putin.

Putin's actions by hacking into our elections and now into our necessary computer systems is tantamount to an armed incursion on American soil.
