In the military we used MEK. I have some here that I got from Lowe's some time ago.
CAUTION: Extremely combustable. Wear rubber gloves. Use outdoors. Make sure to re-oil good. --- SAWMAN

thanks for the input. for the last 50 years i've usually used mineral spirits mixed with SC Gunk. it has worked reasonably well. i've also used gasoline, diesel, kerosene and lots of other stuff. it all either stinks up the shop, is to flammable or doesn't work well. looked into water based but it has problems too. it's hard on pumps and seals and can leave a residue. i just didn't remember mineral spirits being so expensive. oh well, modern times. btw, wally world seems to have the best price locally. thanks again guys.
this is a good place for anything shop related:

Purple Power and Simple Green are great at dissolving grease and gunk. When I was getting grease soaked rifles from the CMP I used Purple Power (smells better than Simple Green) and hot water to clean the parts. The parts would dry quickly since they were hot and had zero oil on them.
