    I just saw on the barrel its stamped 7.62. Not .308. Is my understanding correct that it would not be safe to fire .308 win out of this barrel?

    YES, You can fire both.


    This is correct.

    Without starting an entirely off topic discussion where details are beat to death like a dead horse for 14 pages:

    Roughly speaking, .308 goes into 7.62 the same as .223 goes into 5.56
