There were a ton of warning signs about Cruz, not only in the past but in the time leading up to the shooting:

"A friend of Florida high school shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz said in an interview on Tuesday that she noticed disturbing traits in Cruz prior to Wednesday's shooting.

"He talked about killing our parents, our friends, boyfriends, and girlfriends," Ariana Lopez said on ABC's "Good Morning America."

Lopez said her friendship with Cruz started out normally, however she soon noticed he would often display weapns and post disturbing pictures online.

"He used to sell knives out of his lunchbox, which I thought was insane because this is a school. He's like 'hey guys, want some knives?'" she said.

"He would talk about how he sympathized with Syrian terrorists, and how those who opposed him should be killed. He posted pictures of fifteen or more firearms just on his bed," she continued.

I think the armed resistance portion of the video was overstated - but otherwise an informative video.

WASHINGTON — President Trump directs Justice Department to ban gun modifications like bump stocks used in Las Vegas massacre.

    And so it begins

So let me sum up the arguments at this point -

Yes local law enforcement was called to deal with the shooter 39 times in 7 years and yet never did anything positive in that regards, and in fact most of the time did not even write a report. Yes he was seen by numerous counselors who refused to Baker act him. Yes his friends and family recognized that he was a violent, unstable person. Yes he openly talked and later posted comments on public forums about mass murder -using his own name. Yes he was reported to the FBI not once but twice, the most recent time was about a month before the shooting. Yes was routinely violated school policy by bringing knives to school and selling those knives to other students. Yes the school expelled him for violent behavior. Yes the school only had one armed guard on the day of the shooting and he was located on the other side of campus. Yes, this violent dangerous man who was recently expelled for being violent and who constantly talked about being a school shooter was permitted to walk on the campus of the school he was expelled from, with a RIFLE, and yes that same violent man was then allowed to walk unchallenged into a school building, with a RIFLE. Yes, the school had no means of effectively summoning the one armed guard who was located on the other side of the campus in the event of an emergency.

Given all of these failings by all of these different entities and people, the only logical conclusion is that it was the gun's fault.

Great interview of one of the students. I posted the entire article because it is just that good. Gives me hope for the future.

A survivor of the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, who was previously interviewed by CNN and MSNBC following the mass shooting, told Fox News he believes certain media outlets are politicizing the tragedy to push gun control.

Brandon Minoff, an 18-year-old senior, said the media chose to target gun control advocates instead of focusing on the 17 lives lost in Wednesday's slaughter.

“I wholeheartedly believe that the media is politicizing this tragedy,” Minoff said. “It seems that gun control laws is the major topic of conversation rather than focusing on the bigger issue of 17 innocent lives being taken at the hands of another human.”

Minoff said students at the school are well-meaning and passionate on both sides of the contentious gun issue. At least 100 students from the school were expected to march in front of the State Capital in Tallahassee on Wednesday to demand stricter gun laws. Dozens of his classmates have willingly approached reporters and anchors to advocate for what they see as solutions to stop the school shooting epidemic. But Minoff said not all of the students at the school share the same stance -- yet most of the coverage has ignored those who favor gun rights.

“I know many people who are pro-gun and others who support gun control but it seems that the media is specifically targeting those in support of gun control to make it seem as if they are the majority, and the liberal news outlets are the ones that seem to make the bigger effort to speak to these people, and I'm talking from experience,” said Minoff, who was interviewed on cable news in primetime.

Minoff, who had a class with shooter Nikolas Cruz during his sophomore year, was outside when Cruz started firing. Minoff's brother, Aiden, was inside and heard the shots.

But Minoff said as soon as the gunfire stopped, the gun control push began.

“After getting home Wednesday night, three hours after the shooting took place, sitting on the couch and putting on the news, it pained me to hear conversations of gun control laws as I had just luckily escaped one of the deadliest school shootings in US history," Minoff said.

MSNBC’s Brian Williams asked Minoff what he would do as a lawmaker to stop school shootings. Minoff immediately replied that banning guns just creates a higher demand for them, and contended the real issue is mental health reform.

The next day, Minoff said he watched as CNN again focused on gun control even as the shooter's troubling mental health history -- and missed warning signs -- began to emerge.

“And all day Thursday, CNN was interviewing gun experts and specialists to brainwash the audience that gun control is a necessity,” he said. “They even have an army of my classmates trying to persuade other students that guns are unnecessary and should be illegal.”

Minoff said he supports the First Amendment rights of his classmates, but he believes many of them are uninformed about guns and are just going along with the perceived popular opinion.

He pointed out that on the “March For Our Lives” website the mission statement says “We cannot allow one more teacher to make a choice to jump in front of a firing assault rifle to save the life of students.” But, he noted, an assault rifle is an automatic weapon, and there wasn’t an assault rifle used in the Florida shooting -- rather Cruz was armed with an AR-15.

Like many of his classmates, Minoff wants to make changes so this doesn’t happen again, and he hopes to meet with President Trump to discuss solutions.

Minoff supports some regulations when it comes to purchasing firearms, such as age restrictions and more extensive background checks that include police reports -- especially given the police were called to the Cruz residence nearly 40 times before the shooting occurred.

“I would also talk about the importance of arming security guards and other trained individuals in schools," he said. "The only armed person in the school, the SRO, was reportedly nowhere to be found during the time of the attack and it shows in the fact that Cruz managed to vacate the school unscathed."

He added: "At the same time, [security guard and] Coach Aaron Feis had a face-to-face altercation with Cruz and was unable to do anything but use his body to shield others. The definition of security is ‘state of being free from danger or threat,’ but there is no freedom from danger or threat when security guards are unarmed.”

Look at all those students spewing gun control in Fl and D.C. Are they all little Saints? Which ones have not harassed and bullied other students verbally, physically, sex/text blackmail and hate on social media? We have read parents complaints that it goes on for days, weeks, months and carries over year to year. It has been documented that bullying was the reason some kids have taken firearms to schools and also directly contributed to the suicides of many others. Gun free school zones are easy targets but we also know specific students and teachers were prime targets. Where is the real motive behind these events? Mental health may blur the line between right and wrong but what root cause pushes them in that direction in the first place?

We don't have a complete motive in this case yet. Wanting to be a professional school shooter is the goal but not the WHY.
I'm not providing justification, excuses or sympathy for the murderers, just possible contributing causes to the events. We have all been there in school, somewhere in the pecking order.

We often read about kids that get caught with guns at school. The prime reason given by kids is protection. From who and what drives them to that critical point.

Kids go ahead and protest guns this week and then go back to your dirty deeds creating another murderer or causing another students suicide. Other lives don't matter on TV, movies or video games nor does it matter when your on the giving end of your bullying and harassment. Karma can be a real bitch.

You forgot the "sarcasm font" for that last sentence, but I understood what you meant.

Yeah, complete BS that these traumatized kids are being selectively picked to be paraded in front of microphones and cameras to be used as propaganda machines for the anti-gun crowd.
    Completely missing the point.

    Interesting aspect to the case:

Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz looks set to inherit a $1 million trust fund

But since then, the office has determined that Cruz may be in line to receive money from the estates of his dead parents. If Cruz can access the money, Broward Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer likely would require that he hire his own attorney - and the Public Defender's Office would be off the case, which could be among the most costly in Broward history.

Florida law also allows for the Public Defender to charge someone after the case is finished. "The public is still protected if he comes into money at some later time. The Public Defenders would be reimbursed the cost of its services," said retired Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Scott Silverman, who is not involved in the case.

If that coward inherits money, the civil courts will make sure it goes to the lawyers of the victims' families, first, then, whatever is left over will goto the families, etc.

First, let me say that I believe we all feel rage over such mindless violence; and likely understand the issues from a vested interest point of view on firearm legislation given our beliefs and research and experience in life.

Two things I have formed opinions on listening to the student drama/rage over the repeated shooting events:
    1. I believe the age of majority for all things should be raised to 21. Listening to these not fully educated students and their ideological easy solutions that are not I believe they are not as mature, or as experienced in life as previous generations, so let’s up the bar on all access to guns, ammo, and liquor to 21. This would include voting, as I fail to feel that too many people under 21 simply lack real life experience to make mature, informed opinions. Simple, reach a majority age of 21 and access to all controlled access items comes along with citizenship.

    2. Secondly, restrict firearms and ammo purchases to legal, or naturalized U.S. Citizens, from any source. Why should minors and non-citizens have the right to have and bear arms? Increase penalties on illegal transfers to such persons to make private sellers more cautious.
Indeed, how did this 19-year-old buy .223/5.56 ammo when it is chambered in both rifles and pistols? My sons were unable to buy .22 LR at 18, as it was a "pistol caliber". I believe this used to be part of the ATF regulations; but have lost sight on it as I am OLD, and have not had to worry about it for years.

Like most of you, I know this will NOT stop violence directed toward mass casualties; but it would make me feel easier in mind, likely limit such incidents, and offer a counter lesson when driving into crowds and mass stabbings becomes the ways insane people act out. As mentioned by other members; the younger generations seem more disposed to act on such mad acts, so let’s make it harder for them to do so!

Lastly, armed officers in schools seem like a better action than any others I have hear of read being proposed and likely a needed service since the law continues to make school soft targets to threats of violence from deranged individuals.

I agree...and have a controlled(one) entry point at schools, with armed police, equipped with a m4

speaking from my life view only, I did not have a brain in my head at 18, that was not involved in chasing women and getting drunk...

perhaps a conversation of raising enlistment age in military to 21?

or, accept it, because the alternative weapons suck too, knives, bats, bombs, acid, cars....

the more rats(people) we cram in the cities, the more they will attack each other, proven in scientific tests...

How would you prevent anyone from entering the grounds at any point besides the ECP? Fencing? How high? Would it have barbed wire or razor ribbon?

What would prevent your armed guard from being sniped at the beginning of an attack?

As long as schools have emotional safe-spaces, gender-neutral locker rooms, and a distracting cellphone on every student's desk, I doubt you'll see any serious strides in self-reliance or security.
