I truly believe that this country is on a downward spiral and gaining speed. There are still good,hard working,tax paying people in this country. As for kids not feeling safe at school, blame parents and school staff. BE ADULTS. Fix the problem without burdening your CHILD with it. Do you explain to them the gory details of what happens in a car wreck? Not everyday. But do you make them wear a seatbelt or strap into a car seat every time? Damn well better. Are they having nightmares about car wrecks and internal bleeding, and getting t-boned by a drunk driver? Hopefully not. So why the hell are parents OK with bombarding the kids with what-if scenarios and letting the school employees do the same?

Beef up school security. Train your teachers on what to look out for. Have an effective communication plan and system. NONE of that is dependent on drilling death/mayhem into the mind of small child.
