Finally received my "holy grail" pistol. For years I've wanted a Swiss P/49 (military version of the civilian SIG P210-2) with holster and troop tag of who it was previously issued to. Finally found one I could sorta afford by selling some other firearms.

Made about 1963. Marked with a "P" on the trigger guard indicating it left the service with the soldier it was issued to. Internally it appears to have been fired very little. Some wear and scratches in the surface finish. While the slide is marked SIG on the side, it also has the Hämmerli logo on the rear of the slide visible if the hammer is back, and the same logo on the right side of the frame under the grip. I have some queries out as to why the Hämmerli markings. As best I can figure, the tag says:

    Keller Jūrg 554 48 448
    Ruchacher 011
    8914 Aeugst 7600841

Obviously issued to Jūrg Keller (and Keller is printed inside the holster). If 554 48 448 is his national ID *number, his DOB would be Nov 17, 1948, but that would put him too young for service in 1963, unless the pistol was in storage and issued later. Aeugst is a city in Switzerland (German is spoken there). I can't find Ruchacher as a military unit. TYPICALLY, the soldier tags have the soldier's name and birth date/year in the first line, their military unit and/or job in the second line, and their home city/address in the third line, but it was not consistent with all tags and units. I have some Swiss people looking at it now and will post any info I receive.

    * Swiss national identification number: 554 identifies family name, 48 = year of birth, 448 = 4th quarter, 48th day (Nov 17), but then maybe it's a phone number.

Daezee - Great looking pistol with a lot of history; congrats. I had to "settle" for the new P210 Target model.

A friend recently also got the new P210 target, but has yet to bring it to the range...I want to see if the mag would work and the recoil spring assembly would fit and how it shot.

Daezee, Those are easily made autos?

Frame and upper machined from blocks of steel and hand fitted, no, not easily made and expensive before the days of CNC machining. Guess the Swiss wanted stuff to last forever. Slide and receiver feel like they are moving together on ball bearings. I was introduced to the SIG P210/P49 pistols when I was stationed in Bethesda Maryland by the Swedish Naval Attache and wanted one ever since; I've owned a P210-6 for many years now and finally got my P49. The P210 and P49 had to group 5cm (about 2") or less at 50 meters with 9mm target ammunition from a machine rest. The civilian (P serial number) are more finely finished on the outside than the 5th series of Army (A serial number) P49's like I have. The first few thousand P49's issued in 1949 and early 1950's had a high polish blued finish.

Just got a reply from a gentleman in Switzerland. Herr Keller used to live at Ruchacherstrasse 11, CH-8914, Aeugst, Switzerland. The 7600841 was his phone number. For calling from outside Switzerland, the entire number was 0041 44 760 0841. He is no longer at that address or phone number. His status is unknown at this time.

The Hämmerli marks on the slide and frame probably mean Hämmerli refurbished/refinished the pistol.

I'd like to know what he did in the Army, but probably will never know, but I'll keep digging.

Received more info from Switzerland that the pistol was probably first issued in 1963, refinished/refurbished by Hämmerli and reissued around 1969 to Herr Keller. Also, that during the cold war period, military unit/job information was less likely to be on the troop tag due to security.

Fired the P49 today. Flawless functioning and windage right on (I had hoped due to the staked sights I didn't have to move the sights for windage with my P210 sight adjusting tool). It did shoot high as Swiss P49/P210's normally due as the sighting standard was a six o'clock hold at 50 meters.
    --------------
    From Switzerland, yet another opinion:

Due to the darker writing of the 011 and 7600841, they were added after the person left active military service. The "011" is actually "01" followed by a "/" then 7600841 written below. "01" is the area code for Aeugst and 7600841 the rest of the phone number at the time it was written. The long phone number mentioned above did not come in to being until 2004.
    --------------

So, I decided to try and find out the owners of houses on Ruchacherstrasse (it didn't appear to be a long street), leaving out the 011 or 11 number. At Ruchacherstrasse 11 I found a lady psychiatrist, but the wrong name. At Ruchacherstrasse 9, I found a Ms. Keller-Kurath that has a business there, and she speaks German, English, and French. Her name would indicate that Keller was her maiden name, the same as the previous owner of the pistol...maybe Herr Keller's daughter?

So, I've got another inquiry to the Swiss gentleman that's helping me as to how to write a letter to a possible daughter/relative without being impolite/insensitive. He says one has to be somewhat formal and careful as the Swiss in general are private people.

Went all around town looking for stuff to make some shotshells in 327 federal. Ended up getting most of it from amazon and ballistic products. Cant wait to load some. My wife almost stepped on a cottonmouth closing the gate yesterday. Time for her to learn how to shoot!

The old way of loading a shot cartridges without a shotcup is to use appropriate gas checks. One above the powder charge, then the shot charge, and then a gas check crimps just below the case mouth.
I bet one could get a lot of shot into a nagant 7.62x38 revolver cartridge using this method.
