So I fall asleep watching TV. Wife wakes me up with "are you gonna check the fields before bed?" OK, dress in black and out the door at 10pm. No hogs in peanuts, nothing in cotton, must be deer in the planted pines area, as the heat signatures are rather close to the owner's shooting range like the deer often are. However, they don't raise up their heads like deer...hogs! They are scattered about. Closest adult one is about 18yd into the weeds from the edge of the freshly mowed shooting range area. Wind is perfect, no moon visible, nice quiet walk through short mowed grass to the edge of the range. Wait for the hog to momentarily stop rooting so I can see the head and neck. Bam in the neck and drops right there. 120lb boar. Back home at 10:46pm.

This one taken to a far corner and left for critters. In two days it will be gone. Would have been good eating, but freezers are full.

Would love to take some off your hand if your freezer is full next time.

    1) Do you have a place to clean it?

    2) Will you answer a phone call or text about 11pm to midnight? Many say they will answer, but our experience is that the calls or texts only get answered about 1 in 10 times, so after while one gives up trying. This is after notifying people that want hogs that we are going out and that they will answer our call. It is certainly understood that a Friday or Saturday night might be better for people working weekdays, but weather and wind direction do not always cooperate.

    3) If any are trapped, the ranch owner has his place with running water, equipment and electricity. Hogs are not killed until after sunrise and a group of us get together to clean. After all the participants get what they want, it is pretty easy to give away the rest because all the meat has been cleaned and cut. We will have a couple of hours notice when that happens. The trap(s) is checked every day, but hogs have gotten trap shy. In fact, please PM me your name and phone/text number in case any are trapped. It is easy to hold meat on ice for a couple of days.

I feel ya on the no answers when called. Where I am I’ve trapped 12 in the last 2 weeks out of a neighborhood doing a favor for a friend. No body wants them unless they are free and skinned and quartered. Used to get 40 to 80 skinned and quartered with no questions all day long. Since I don’t believe in just dumping them it is what it is at this point.

Went out last night between my partner and I, we saw 1 fox, 4 coyotes, and over 30 deer. No hogs.

I’ve stopped trying to give them away, I’m not going to dress and deliver Pork to anyone thats capable of cleaning a pig themselves. That said ,there a 3 or 4 older folks That I will on occasion drop off a ham to. they seem to need and appreciate the gift of fresh pork. To each his own, but my objective is to slow up the damage that they do if left unchecked.
